They're Applying to America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, over decades rather than months, however it is still disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you should give him your sweater also.

The evident and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of profound affection centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Best Among Us

So I have been encouraged to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it imply pretending the most negative about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both meekness and belief, a combination that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
