The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
