European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
