Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
