At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
